The annual SIAL Innovation contest, which rewards the world’s most innovative food and non-food (like packaging and containers) products, unveiled its 2018 list of top 10 finalists. Canadian products were particularly successful this year, as they took eight out of 10 spots on the list. What were some considerations in the selection process of the most innovative products?

Some of the Canadian products included on the top-10 list are Crickstart protein bars, with an innovative feature in recipe and composition; Next Ingredients’ organic fruits liquid puree with and innovative feature in technology manufacturing process, packaging and wrapping; and Three Farmers’ Pea Pops, with an innovative feature in marketing positioning and merchandising.

“Innovation in the food sector takes many forms. When reviewing entrants for the SIAL Innovation Awards, I look at every aspect of the product. I’m seeking excellence in execution not just based on taste or branding, but evaluate products based on what they do best,” said Dana McCauley SIAL Canada 2018 Innovation ambassador.

The three-day awards ceremoney will take place at Montreal’s Palais Des Congrès, starting May 2 and will highlight the top three winners of the contest who will share an award totalling $20,000 and more.
